A Season to Simplify

When considering what to write about for the December issue of The Well, many different topics came to mind. But we didn’t want to clutter your inbox with more recipes to cook, or health-related items to add to your to-do list. Instead, in the spirit of simplifying the holiday season, we are sharing a few items of interest for you to enjoy and consume at your leisure, hopefully with a good cup of tea or coffee and perhaps a holiday treat or two. Wishing you a healthy holiday season that provides time for rest, relaxation, reflection and remembrance.

Be Somewhere Else

How much time do you spend on devices each day? How much time on social media? Lush cosmetics recently made the news for announcing that the brand would deactivate the company Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and Snapchat accounts due to the growing concerns about the mental health impact of social media. If you look at the company Instagram account, there is now a bold message that simply states, “Be somewhere else.” The very first issue of The Well addressed some of the challenges of social media from a nutrition information perspective, but it’s interesting to note that the negative impacts may go beyond information. The bold stance Lush is taking made me consider my social media usage and how to better create boundaries to protect one of the most valuable assets we have, our time. I hope other companies follow Lush’s example, in the meantime, I think we all have a personal responsibility to assess how our device usage is impacting our lived experience each day.

Listen to Something New

Do you have a food-related podcast that is a favorite? This year, I started listening to the new food-focused podcast known as the Happy Eating podcast, hosted by Carolyn Williams, PhD, RD & Brierley Horton MS, RD. The podcast explores the connection between what we eat and mental wellness. It is rich with supporting scientific studies and points out when evidence is lacking. I’ve always been fascinated with how what we eat impacts physical health, so exploring more about the connection between food and mental health and how our choices can impact that balance is worthwhile. Who doesn’t want more happiness? And if food can positively impact mood, couldn’t we all use an extra serving?
